Matt Cain…Highest Paid Pitcher Ever

The San Francisco Giants have worked out a new deal with stud right-hander Matt Cain, which will make him the highest paid pitcher in MLB history. Cain’s new contract is 6 years worth a whopping $127.5 million. He was set to make just $15 million this year; the last year of his contract. The previous record was Kevin Brown’s 1998 contract with the Dodgers of $105 million. Jeez, with all of the legendary pitchers of the old days and even currently players like CC Sabathia, Roy Halladay, and Justin Verlander, it is more than shocking that Matt Cain earns this honor. Hell, he’s arguably not even the best pitcher on his own team, let alone the rest the MLB, with two-time Cy Young award winner Tim Lincecum playing with him by the bay. Well, Giants General Manager, Brian Sabean has said for years that his priority is to keep his young, yet dominating pitching staff in tact, and he has done that. After giving Lincecum a 2-year $40.5 million extention in January, these two will be terrorizing the NL West for years to come.

Tejada Needs To Hang It Up

The Giants are doing well this season, enjoying being in first place. Getting Giants tickets would be a good idea. On the other hand, Miguel Tejada is not doing so well. Tejada was once an MVP of the league. But now, saying he is a shadow of his former self is an understatement. Between steroids and lying about his age, Tejada’s career is certainly not going in the right direction. It could be time for him to hang up the boots.

Uribe Falls One Spot in the Top Five Shortstop List of 2010

Four out of the top five shortstops have remained on the list since early June. Out of the four players that have remained, three of them have moved in the standings. There is a new number one, read on to see who it is!

4. Juan Uribe, San Francisco Giants: Uribe falls one spot to number four this time around. Uribe’s average fell 20 points since June 21. Uribe is now hitting only .259 and at this rate he will be off the list by the end of the season. Just like Gonzalez at number five, Uribe is on this list because of his production numbers. Uribe has 15 home runs, four more since June 21 and 61 RBI’s, 18 more since June 21. Uribe is actually leading all shortstops in RBI’s which is why he is still on this list. If there could be two number five’s, I would have made Uribe five also because he is pretty much equal with Gonzalez, but the 11 more RBI’s made him better to me, but just barely. The Giants are holding their own still only one and a half games out of first place behind the Padres. If Uribe can raise his average back up and continue to drive in runs at the rate he is, they have a good chance of winning the division.

Juan Uribe Makes #3 of the Best Shortstops of 2010

Only one of the big three shortstops remain, Derek Jeter. Nomar Garciapara retired this year and Alex Rodriguez moved over to third base when he came to the Yankees. Now when people ask who the premier shortstops are? They struggle to get two or three names out. I somehow came up with the top five shortstops of 2010, it was a struggle, but here they are.

3. Juan Uribe, San Francisco Giants: The surprising Giants are in second place in their division, only a game and a half behind the Padres. Uribe is contributing in a huge way this season for the Giants. I don’t think anyone expected Uribe to put up these kind of numbers, he’s batting .279 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI’s. Uribe probably hasn’t qualified as a top five shortstop at any point in his career. At the age of 31 here he is finally making it to number three on the list. The big question is will Uribe keep these stats going all year? If he does he is on pace to have the best numbers of his career and can help the Giants possibly make it into the playoffs for the first time since the departure of Barry Bonds. Uribe is second on the team in home runs, one shy of Aubrey Huff, and is leading the team in RBI’s. If Uribe comes back down to earth the Giants will fall back down with him. In my opinion I do not see Uribe lasting on the top five list all season long.

Should The Giants Worry About Tim Lincecum?

Is Tim Lincecum in a funk or is it something that the Giants should seriously worry about? Lincecum’s last three starts have been bad by most starting pitcher’s standards and horrible by the lofty standards that the reigning two time Cy Young winner has set. In his last three starts, Lincecum has not gotten out of the 6th inning and has given up 5, 6, and 3 earned runs. While some believe that his small frame and awkward delivery may be taking its toll, I believe it is just a small blip on a career that will continue to astonish. Lincecum has toyed with a new pitch this season, a changeup, that he is starting to throw too much. Early in the year, when Lincecum was his usual dominant self, he was throwing the changeup sparingly and had great results. Due to the success that he had with the pitch, he began to fall in love with it and has forgotten what made him such a great pitcher in the past. If Lincecum only sparingly uses his changeup, the two time Cy Young winner will be fine and Giants fans will have no need to worry.

The Giants “Are Who We Thought They Are”

The San Francisco Giants are off to a pretty good start and figure to be a factor in the National League west all season. Through 14 games, the Giants looks as if they are exactly what everyone suspected they would be coming into the season: heavy on starting pitching and light in power. The Giants have gotten fantastic starting pitching from their top four, headed by the two time reigning NL Cy Young winner, Tim Lincecum, who has given up just two earned runs in 20 innings pitched. In addition to Lincecum, Barry Zito, Matt Cain, and Jonathan Sanchez have all been very good for the club as they sit in a tie for first place in the NL West. The team is also expected to call up prized prospect Madison Bumgarner in the early summer to complete the 5 man starting rotation.
While the Giants pitching has been great, fans of the Giants have to be worried about their offense and whether they can continue to score runs at a high pace. 14 games into the season, no Giant has more than 2 homeruns, and only one player on the roster has hit more than 30 homeruns in a season, and that was Aubrey Huff who did it once in 2008 with 32. As the season moves on, it will be interesting to see if the Giants offense can provide enough support for their dominant starting rotation. If the Giants are able to add a bat at some point in the season, the Giants could be a very dangerous team in October.
