Jaguars 2013 NFL Draft

In the 2013 NFL draft the Jacksonville Jaguars focused on other things than what they needed. They are a couple of years away from being a contender, so instead of drafting what they needed. They focused on filling in some key roles they need when they are more competitive on the field. This might help them be more competitive on the field. Luke Joeckel is most likely going to fill in for Eugene Monroe’s until his contract gets resolved. Jonathan Cyprien is a man who is not afraid to hit and will be played in the secondary as well as the middle.

The run down for who the Jaguars got goes like this. In the first round the got Luke Joeckel out of Texas A&M. In the second round they Jonathan Cyprien out of Florida International. In the third round they got Dwayne Gratz out of Connecticut. In the fourth round they got Ace Sanders out of South Carolina. In the fifth round they got Denard Robinson out of Michigan which is a big pick for them. In the sixth round they got Josh Evans out of Florida. In the seventh round they got two players Jeremy Harris out of New mexico and Demetrius McCray out of Appalachian State.

They missed a couple of gaps they should have filled such as their quarter back. They need a long term quarter back to fill the role. They also missed out on a pass rusher. Last year they were the leagues worst with only 20 sacks throughout the whole year. That is where they should have put a little more focus. Their going to have to sign some veterans to fix this problem.

The Jaguars struggled through a 2-14 season last year and this season does not look much brighter. A healthy and motivated Maurice Jones-Drew should help the offense, but until Blaine Gabbert proves he is worthy of being a starting quarterback in the NFL, the offense will continue to struggle. It will be intriguing to see if the Jaguars reach for Geno Smith in the draft or if they focus on improving their defensive line with the second pick.

Poor Offense

Poor Jaguars. Blaine Gabbert continues to look like one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL. Justin Blackmon isn’t getting it done. Cecil Shorts isn’t a long-term option. An unhappy Maurice Jones-Drew is really all they have.

4-12

The Jaguars were 5-11 last year and will go 4-12 this year. Will Gabbert continue to suck? Probably.

The Claws Wearing Thin

In what is increasingly becoming a fiercely competitive AFC South, the Jaguars are fighting to stay relevant with the same core of guys they’ve had for the last couple of years. David Garrard has the reigns at quarterback, the speedy little guy in Maurice Jones-Drew headlines the running game, and the bulk of the Jags offense, and Mike Sims-Walker and veteran Torry Holt serve as the two primary passing targets.

Their defense is suspect, with each major category ranging near the bottom of the league. The only bright piece to this puzzle is in Jones-Drew. Outside of him, there isn’t much to be excited about for Jacksonville fans this coming season. Attendance never was very good in J’ville and I don’t expect it to recover this year either.

Jones-Drew will win a couple of games this season and serve as a nice fantasy pickup, but the rest of the team won’t benefit much. The Jags will be finishing last in the division this year with a record of 6-10.

Del Rio to remain Jags coach

After conducting his most extensive review in 15 years, Jacksonville Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver decided to stick with coach Jack Del Rio.

At least for another year.

Weaver held a half-day meeting with Del Rio on Tuesday, then said the two would continue their rebuilding project with the Jaguars.

“I believe in Jack, that’s he’s the guy,” Weaver said two days before his 75th birthday. “After going through this process, Jack is the guy that can get us there. The fans have to have enough trust in me to believe that I’m making the right decision for the franchise.”

The announcement came amid reports that Del Rio was a candidate to succeed Pete Carroll at Southern California. Carroll left USC to become the Seattle Seahawks coach. The L.A. Daily News reported Monday that Del Rio, an All-American linebacker for the Trojans in 1984, had been sent a contract to sign.

“Didn’t even talk about that,” Weaver said. “I wasn’t interested in that. I was interested in if Jack wanted to be here and was committed to this franchise and that he shared my vision and my goals for this franchise and how we go forward. That was the substance of the conversations.”

Jaguars’ Season Rests On Three-Game Homestand

Home might have never looked so good to the Jaguars early Monday morning when their charter plane touched down at the Jacksonville International Airport just a few hours after a 20-3 loss at San Francisco, the team’s second lopsided West Coast defeat of the season.

And home the Jaguars will stay for the next three weeks, at the best time possible: in December, in the thick of the AFC wild-card race despite the loss to the 49ers.

“For us to be successful, we will have to take advantage of having these home games,” fullback Greg Jones said Monday.

“We’re in control of our own destiny and you can’t ask for more than that at this time,” added guard Uche Nwaneri. “We’re fortunate to be control. Now we have three in a row at home, three huge games.”

The Jaguars (6-5) will face Houston (5-6) on Sunday at 1 p.m., followed by Miami (5-6) on Dec. 13 and Indianapolis (11-0) on Dec. 17 in a Thursday night game.
