The Indians have plenty of reason for optimism this season. They added Micheal Bourn, Nick Swisher, Mark Reynolds, Brett Myers, Trevor Bauer and most importantly Terry Francona. While the pitching staff is still suspect, the Indians should have a potent lineup with Carlos Santana, Asdrubal Cabrera, Micheal Brantley and Jason Kipnis leading the way. The Indians do not have as much talent as the division favorite, the Detroit Tigers, but thanks to a strong bullpen and an infusion of energy from Francona and the other recent additions, the Indians could make the AL Central race very interesting.

Indians Never Learn

Rebuilding is essential in sports. Every team does it at one point, and the Indians seem to be doing it right now. But are they really? It seems as if the Indians are a staple for grooming players that go on to have equal or better success elsewhere. Players like Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Cliff Lee, and C.C. Sabathia all excel for the Indians. But for most of them, they look for winning success elsewhere. Along with the players listed above, there are laundry lists of stars that have played for the Indians in the past ten years or so.

But now the Indians find themselves in the basement of the MLB. No, they are clearly not the worst team, and should not be considered so. But, they are not exactly in favorable position. The Indians have little to look forward to for the future. And when the exciting future gets here, they will be on their way out before the fans of Cleveland realize it. No wonder why LeBron James wore a Yankees hat to a playoff game in Cleveland.

Westbrook grabs distinction as ‘Wild Thing’

By throwing four wild pitches Monday, Jake Westbrook tied a Indians franchise record that had been done three times before.

Sam McDowell was the first to do it, in 1961. He did it again three years later, and Steve Hargan heaved four wild pitches in 1965.

GIVING THANKS — Nothing wrong with starting the season by being thankful.

”I’m thankful I’m alive and for everything I have,” Indians manager Manny Acta said. ”I’m lucky to have the chance to win or lose a major-league game. I could be managing in an independent league.”

IT’S BEEN A WHILE — This is the 70th anniversary of the only Opening Day no-hitter in history.

Bob Feller achieved the feat on April 16, 1940, against the Chicago White Sox. Feller, now 91, attended Monday’s game and will be honored at a lunch today in downtown Chicago. Feller’s sister, Marguerite, who lives in metro Chicago and watched her borther’s no-hitter, also will be at today’s lunch.

Cleveland’s Choo proves to have 20-20 vision

Choo Shin-soo of the Cleveland Indians reached the 20-20 mark (20 homers, 20 steals) in his second to last regular season game yesterday. Although 11 other batters achieved the feat this year, Choo became the first Asian in MLB history to do so.

Facing the Boston Red Sox at the Fenway Park in Boston, Choo hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning. Trailing 10-4 and with Asdrubal Cabrera on first and no outs, Choo took an outside fastball from Paul Byrd and hit it over the “Green Monster.”

The right fielder had hit his 19th home run of the season five days earlier on Sept. 29 against the Chicago White Sox. Choo has 21 stolen bases in the season. The 27-year-old has now reached the 20-20 mark in his first full season with the Indians. He earned two hits in four at-bats to raise his season batting average to .300 and three RBI raises his season total to 86 for the season. He currently leads the team in RBI.

The Busan native signed a one year extension during the offseason and is expected to sign an extension with the Indians after the season.

Indians fire manager Eric Wedge

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians fired manager Eric Wedge in the final days of a terrible season.

Wedge guided the Indians to one playoff appearance in seven seasons, and this year the club fell out of contention early and is currently one game out of last place in the AL Central.

The Indians, who are 64-92, have scheduled a Wednesday afternoon news conference at Progressive Field to announce Wedge’s dismissal.

Cleveland recently lost 11 straight games and have dropped 20 of its last 25 games.

Wedge will finish out the season as manager, including Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox. Cleveland’s coaching staff has also been informed it will not be retained, but some of the staff could be rehired by the Indians’ next manager.

The Indians are expected to begin interviews for a new manager in the weeks ahead.

Two years ago, Cleveland was one win away from a World Series trip. The Indians fell to 81-81 in 2008, but were expected to bounce back and contend this season. However, a slow start snowballed and by midseason the club traded defending Cy Young winner Cliff Lee and All-Star catcher Victor Martinez to begin rebuilding again.

Owners Larry and Paul Dolan and general manager Mark Shapiro have spent the past several weeks reviewing Cleveland’s organization, including the manager and initially said they would wait until after the season before making a decision on Wedge. However, they decided not to delay what many Indians players felt was inevitable.

Sizemore’s second surgery goes well

Grady Sizemore went 2-for-2 in the surgery stat line.

Sizemore underwent successful surgery on Wednesday morning to reinforce an unstable abdominal wall on his lower left side. The condition, known as an athletic pubalgia, was corrected by Dr. Bill Meyers in Philadelphia. Head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff accompanied Sizemore on the trip to Philly and reported that all went well during the 20-minute procedure, which required a small incision in the region.

So that’s two successful surgeries in the span of a week for Sizemore, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow on Sept. 9.

Prospect Knapp scheduled for surgery

Less than two months after the Indians made him a key acquisition in the trade that sent reigning Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee to the Phillies, Jason Knapp is headed to the surgeon’s table.

Knapp, a hard-throwing, 19-year-old right-hander, will have arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Tuesday, head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff announced Monday. The procedure will be performed by Dr. David Altchek in New York City.

The Indians knew they were receiving damaged goods, to some degree, when they acquired Knapp as part of the six-player trade in which they parted with Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco and also received right-hander Carlos Carrasco, catcher Lou Marson and infielder Jason Donald. But the fact that Knapp has loose bodies in his shoulder and needs surgery was information the club was not privy to on July 29.
