Furcal Moves In to the Two Spot of the Top Five Shortstops of 2010

Four out of the top five shortstops have remained on the list since early June. Out of the four players that have remained, three of them have moved in the standings. There is a new number one, read on to see who it is!

2. Rafael Furcal, Los Angeles Dodgers: Furcal is the only newcomer on the list and he is already up to number two. Furcal isn’t known to be a power hitter he only has eight home runs and 38 RBI’s, but he is hitting .317, which is the highest average for any shortstop in baseball right now. Furcal’s ability to get on base makes him a dangerous weapon because once he’s on he can steal his way around the diamond. Furcal’s on base percentage is .382 and he has 18 stolen bases. Unfortunately, the Dodgers aren’t having as good of a year as Furcal is. The Dodgers currently sit in fourth place in the tough NL West, eight games out of first. The Dodgers still think they have a chance because at the trade deadline they picked up three big names, Ted Lily, Ryan Theriot, and Octavio Dotel. These big acquisitions may be just enough for the Dodgers to squander a wild card berth.

Podsednik Hitless

Scott Podsednik made his debut for the Dodgers Thursday night. However, the newly acquired outfielder went 0-3, although he did reach base with a walk. With the trade deadline approaching, it is unlikely that the Dodgers will do much else.

Right now, they find themselves 7.0 games back in the division, as well as 3.5 games behind in the Wild Card race. It is not impossible for them to make the playoffs, but it looks more unlikely than not. Usually one team gets hot in August, and carries that momentum into the playoffs. The Dodgers need to do that in order to make the playoffs.

Jonathan Broxton Makes #5 of the Best Closers of 2010

Four out of the top five closers come as no surprise. The shocker is number one, he has always been known as a good relief pitcher, but I don’t think anyone expected him to be the top closer of 2010 so far this year.

5. Jonathan Broxton, Los Angeles Dodgers: Broxton has established himself as the best closer of the National League. With a fastball that tops out around 100 mph and a devastating slider, Broxton can be untouchable at times. Broxton has 52 strikeouts in 36.1 innings so far, that just goes to show how much his pitches move.
This season Broxton has 18 saves, only two blown saves, and a 1.98 ERA. Broxton is on pace to have the lowest ERA of his career and match his career high of 36 saves that he had last year. The Dodgers have had a rollercoaster season so far in the first half. Currently the Dodgers are three games back from the everlasting Padres who are still in first place. The Dodgers must feel confident when they go into the ninth inning with the lead knowing that Broxton only has two blown saves this year. In the past Broxton struggled with the saves. Two years ago Broxton had eight blown saves, last year he had six and this year he is on pace for four. Every year Broxton is improving, before long he might be the best closer in all of baseball.

Did Adrian Beltre Take Steroids in 2004?

I took a look back at the year 2004 and discovered many players who were only average players really stepped up their offense that year. Then there are other players who were already good and had a spectacular year in 2004. The players that I came up with that stood out the most in 2004 are a little fishy to me. Is their production up that year by natural talent or was it a product of the steroid era?

Adrian Beltre: Beltre’s numbers really stand out in 2004 compared to the rest of the years he has played. Beltre averaged 20 home runs and 70 RBI’s from 1999-2003. All of a sudden in 2004 Beltre hit 48 home runs and 121 RBI’s. This huge year helped Beltre land a huge contract the next year with the Mariners where he went back to his usual numbers of around 23 home runs and 70 RBI’s from 2005 to 2010.

Andre Ethier Makes #2 of the Best Outfielders of 2010

There is an abundance of outfielders so far this season that are putting up huge numbers for their teams. Out of 20 hopefuls I narrowed the list down to five. Out of all the positions, outfielders are definitetly putting up the best stats this year.

2. Andre Ethier, Los Angeles Dodgers: Ethier is sacrifycing some of his power this season to raise his average up by hitting more for contact. Ethier emerged last year for the Dodgers as one of the top three power bats in their lineup. With an outfield of Ethier, Matt Kemp and, Manny Ramirez, the Dodgers may have the best hitting outfield in all of baseball. Ethier is hitting .320, which is third best in the National League. Ethier’s power numbers are still good, but are a little down from last year with 12 home runs and 44 RBI’s so far this season. The Dodgers are having an up and down season so far this year, currently in third place, but only three games out of first in their division. Once the Dodgers three-headed monster of an outfield starts hitting on all cylinders all at once, the Dodgers will be hard to stop.

Wake Up Manny

A few years ago, Manny Ramirez provided an unbelievable spark for the Los Angeles Dodgers. His batting average with the team in 2008 was a whopping .396. But last year, we all know Ramirez was suspended for steroid use. Due to that, Manny’s numbers were far from impressive last year. And this year, the same can be said.

A .281 average, five home runs, and 28 RBI’s are not bad by any means. However, this is not the Manny Ramirez that we are all used to. Yes, he is getting up there in age. And yes, maybe his performance is bound to be worse since he is off steroids. But for the sake of Dodger fans, Manny needs to start being Manny.

Koufax-like Clayton Kershaw growing into ace Dodgers crave

The comparisons start simply enough: The kid is left-handed. And when Clayton Kershaw snaps off his curveball while wearing a Los Angeles Dodgers uniform, his fate is sealed.
Kershaw is 22 and living with comparisons to Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax.

“I’d rather just go and pitch,” says Kershaw, who concedes that he is both humbled and embarrassed by the references to the Dodgers legend from the 1950s and ’60s.

He will just go and pitch tonight at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park in the Dodgers’ second game of the season.

That he’s starting Game 2 is the source of different questions around the Dodgers, but not totally disconnected from the Koufax comparisons.

Kershaw has a similar response.

“I’m not worried about when I pitch,” he says. “I just want to get ready and do the best I can.”

Dodgers lineup expected to stay the same for NLCS

Whomever the opponent in the National League Championship Series, the Dodgers are not expected to make changes in the lineup.

It isn’t broken, so manager Joe Torre doesn’t figure to fix it, which means Ronnie Belliard will be the second baseman over Orlando Hudson, Matt Kemp hits in the No. 2 hole and Manny Ramirez continues to bat cleanup.

What really is making the lineup click more than anything right now is Rafael Furcal’s production at the top of the order. He not only had a .500 batting average (6 for 12) in the three-game National League Division Series, he had a .667 on-base percentage. He also is a threat on the basepaths with 12 steals.
