Bucking Broncos

After an unexpected 6-0 start last year, the Broncos came back down to earth, as they finished with a mediocre 9-7 record. This year presents a quarterback conundrum. Kyle Orton had the starting job last year. This year, the Broncos picked up Brady Quinn from the Browns and drafted Tim Tebow in the first round. Now there is somewhat of a logjam at the position. No one really knows who will start at the beginning of the season, although Orton is expected to start again.

LenDale White was picked up from the Titans to bolster their running back core that includes Justin Fargas, Correll Buckhalter, and Knowshon Moreno.

Elvis Dumervil is out for the season after leading the league in sacks last year with 17. That will be a huge blow. The old vets in Champ Bailey and Brian Dawkins will highlight their secondary once again, but one has to wonder how many prime years they have left in them.

The Broncos will finish second in the division thanks to the directionless Chiefs and Raiders, but not much more. They will finish a dissapointing 6-10 in my opinion.

Orton misses third straight practice

Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton missed a third consecutive practice Friday with a sprained left ankle.

Coach Josh McDaniels said Orton’s availability for Sunday’s pivotal contest with San Diego will come down to a game-time decision.

Backup Chris Simms again took first-team practice repetitions, as he has all week in the absence of Orton, who was injured during last week’s 27-17 loss at Washington.

Simms is in line to make his first start since September 2006, when he suffered a life-threatening spleen injury while with Tampa Bay.

Orton thrives with Broncos, rookie coach

Through the first few months of his rookie season, Tom Brandstater has learned plenty from Kyle Orton about the art of playing quarterback in the National Football League.

Brandstater is not, however, likely to seek automobile advice from the Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback. A well-known environmentalist, Orton has ditched the high-priced vehicles and drives a Honda Insight hybrid.

“It always gives me a laugh every time I see him get out of a meeting and hop in his little fake car, as I call it,” said Brandstater, the Broncos’ third-string quarterback.

That “fake” car may not be the typical vehicle for an NFL quarterback, but it’s typical for Orton.

Surprise, surprise: Orton, Favre out of this world

It’s the last thing we would have expected coming out of the preseason: Kyle Orton, who was error-prone and injured while the Broncos were losing all four of their exhibition games, is playing like a Pro Bowl quarterback for a Denver team that is 6-0 after Monday’s convincing 34-23 victory at San Diego.

Meanwhile, in Minnesota, 40-year-old Brett Favre has found the fountain of youth in leading the Vikings to a 6-0 start. Despite first declining to come of retirement and then, after changing his mind once again, barely breaking a sweat in the preseason, Favre is flashing his gun-slinging style, rallying Minnesota to yet another come-from-behind victory Sunday over Baltimore.

Orton and the Broncos. Favre and the Vikings. Who has been the NFL’s biggest surprise so far this season? Here’s my top-5 list:
