Rickie Weeks Makes #2 of the Best Second Basemen of 2010

Four out of the top five second basemen remain on the list from early July. The only newcomer is a big surprise, after years of hype he is finally doing what everyone expected him to do. Out of the four players who remained, only one of them moved from their top five position.

2. Rickie Weeks, Milwaukee Brewers: The only newcomer to the list comes as a big surprise. From not even being considered back in early June, to now being the second best offensive second basemen in baseball, Weeks is finally proving that he belongs in the majors. After a disappointing five seasons as the Brewers second basemen, Weeks is hitting .276 with 22 home runs and 67 RBI’s this season. Weeks’s power numbers already surpass any of his previous season totals. The Brewers are currently in third place in their division, eight games behind the Reds and Cardinals. If the Brewers aren’t sellers at the trade deadline they do have a shot at coming back with the help of Weeks, Prince Fielder who is due to have a strong second half, Ryan Braun, and Corey Hart. With that kind of power in their lineup they should be able to out slug anyone in the National League. Will the Brewers be patient and hope that these guys all catch on fire at the same time? Or will they trade them away? We will find out in a few days.

Corey Hart is Predicted to Make it to the Finals of the 2010 Home Run Derby

The 25th annual Homer Run Derby is taking place in Angels Stadium in Anaheim. Last year Prince Fielder took home the derby trophy. This year Fielder will not be back to defend his title. There will be five new derby contestants this year, it is time for a fresh young batch of players to liven things up a bit. Here are my predictions for how everyone will do tonight, starting from least favorite.

2. Corey Hart, Milwaukee Brewers: Hart is having a huge power year out of nowhere. Move over Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun, Hart is the big bat in the Brewers lineup this season. Hart has the third most home runs in the league this season with 21. Hart never hit more than 24 home runs in a season, he is almost past that now! Hart is also slugging .569, which is fourth most in the National League. Hart is a right handed batter, but in his case i don’t think that matters too much. This guy can hit home runs way further than that and is by in the best shape combined with power in the derby. There is one guy that stands in Hart’s way.

Corey Hart Makes #4 of the Best Outfielders of 2010

There is an abundance of outfielders so far this season that are putting up huge numbers for their teams. Out of 20 hopefuls I narrowed the list down to five. Out of all the positions, outfielders are definitetly putting up the best stats this year.

4. Corey Hart, Milwaukee Brewers: Move over Ryan Braun and make way for Corey Hart. This year Hart is putting up better power numbers that his teammate Braun. Braun’s homerun numbers are down this year, but he is still having a solid offensive year, just not as good as Hart’s. Hart is known to be an average hitter over his short career so far, but this year his stats already passed his season totals from last year. Hart is hitting .268 with 18 home runs and 54 RBI’s. Hart is actually in third for most home runs in baseball and fifth in most RBI’s. Where is this production coming from? Maybe a little bit of Braun power rubbed off on Hart.
Unfortunately the Brewers are having a terrible year, currently in fourth place, 10 games under .500 and nine games back from the division leading Cardinals. If Hart keeps up his production, which would give him career highs in almost every stat possible the Brewers may have a chance to turn things around. Hart alone will not give the Brewers a playoff berth but if Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun starting pounding out more home runs, they have a good chance to turn things around.

Wolf wins in debut, Brewers top Rockies

Randy Wolf’s debut for the Brewers was a success, Casey McGehee and Rickie Weeks homered and Milwaukee beat the Colorado Rockies 7-5 on Tuesday night.

Wolf (1-0) struck out eight in 6 2-3 innings in his first start since signing a $29.75 million, three-year contract in the offseason to bolster Milwaukee’s starting staff.
McGehee and Weeks did their part to help. McGehee hit a three-run homer in the first and Weeks added a solo shot off Rockies starter Greg Smith (0-1) in the fifth.

Trevor Hoffman gave up a run in a rocky ninth for his 592nd career save.
Milwaukee snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Rockies. Colorado’s Ian Stewart hit his second homer in as many days and doubled and tripled.

Brewers may have new look in ‘10

Last winter, the Brewers tweaked the roster. This time, they face the prospect of wholesale changes.

“There are a lot of question marks,” manager Ken Macha told reporters late in the season. “I think you’ll have a lot to write about.”

Macha himself was among those question marks before general manager Doug Melvin declared that Macha would be back in 2010. The coaching staff will see some changes — including the key pitching coach position — and the roster figures to see plenty.

It’s nothing new for Macha.

“When I managed in Oakland, we had free agents going left and right,” he said. “It was guys like [Jason] Giambi, [Miguel] Tejada, and all four years I was there I had a different closer. There was always movement there.

Brewers give Braun another day off

Mark it down as another mysterious off-day for Brewers slugger Ryan Braun. Coming off a 4-for-14 series in Arizona in which he became the sixth player in history to hit 100 homers in his first three seasons, Braun was out of the lineup for Monday’s series opener at Wrigley Field. It was Braun’s third day off in eight days, counting the team’s open date on Thursday, but neither Braun nor manager Ken Macha offered much in the way of an explanation.

“Just a day off,” Macha insisted.

“Not playing,” Braun said. “That’s all I’ve got.”

And that’s all he would say, until he passed through the clubhouse a few minutes later.

“I don’t mean to be a jerk. I just don’t know what to say,” Braun said, throwing his hands in the air. “Who knows?”

When Braun was on the bench for the Brewers’ Sept. 7 game against Chris Carpenter and the Cardinals — in which Carpenter went on to pitch a one-hit shutout — Macha mentioned that Braun was getting treatment for a sore shoulder. Braun does get treatment on his right shoulder, but he has refused to acknowledge any physical ailments. He stood by that stance on Monday.
